A trip to Costco 2/06/12
I switched this month from being a member of Sam's Club, to shopping at Costco. Why? Because I am indefinitely borrowing my family's membership card, which means I am buying in bulk for free now! On to the groceries...
I still had plenty of ground beef, veggies, and 3 bags of my homemade spaghetti sauce left, but I was completely out of chicken and there are only so many times I can tolerate eating beef in one week!

I still had plenty of ground beef, veggies, and 3 bags of my homemade spaghetti sauce left, but I was completely out of chicken and there are only so many times I can tolerate eating beef in one week!
Here's what I got:
- 6.9 lb can Crushed Tomatos: $3
- A bag of 6 mixed bell peppers: $7
- 2 whole chickens: $8
I also went to Publix and spent a total of $9 for...
- 2 boxes Whole Wheat Lasagna: $2 (they rang up wrong, so they gave me one box free!)
- 2 bags shredded cheese (mozzarella and cheddar): $4
- Rice: $1
- Ricotta Cheese: $2
Here's what I did with the Costco groceries...
Step 1: The Chickens
I posted this video with my last grocery trip, but here it is again. It is a video which shows how to cut up a whole chicken. I know it seems intimidating, but it is really simple and cost so much less than buying a bag of frozen breasts.
I cut up my chickens, individually bagged and froze the breasts, legs, and thighs. I cooked the rest in a slow cooker with salt, pepper, and one chopped onion on high for 3-4 hours. When done, I shred it, put it in a ziplock bag, froze it. Since I haven't used any broth from my last chickens yet, I admit I behaved un-savvy and tossed the broth from the slow cooker :-/. Hey, I'm running out of freezer space and can't put anything in there that I will probably not use in the near future!
Step 2: Cut up the vegetables
I only had bell peppers, but I chopped them up and froze them according to color. I did leave 4 behind, which I chopped into big chunks for kabobs. I froze half of the 4 so I can kabob again later.
This is my freezer at the end of all that chopping and dividing. All veggies are in the door, meat and spaghetti sauce are on the top shelf, everything else on the bottom. I do not have a deep freezer, so to make everything fit, I let it all freeze flat, then prop it up and store it!
Step 3: Make/Freeze Spaghetti Sauce
I have not done this yet; I'm waiting to finish off the 3 bags left beforehand. However, to see how I make my sauce out of the big can of crushed tomatoes and pack it with veggies, click here!
